Megaman X: the 8th entry in the Megaman franchise and the last title to be released on a Nintendo console. Developed and published by Capcom in early 2002, it served as a farewell to its beloved mascot and was met with mixed reviews. The game launched simultaneously with an enhanced port of Megaman 8 for the PlayStation 2 which received greater praise due to improved graphics, sound, and online play. The game features two playable characters that can be chosen at the beginning of each stage - Zero (default) or Axl (first introduced in Megaman 9). The game also features two rival bosses - Sigma (played by Adam Blampied) and Sigma (played by Tony Todd). The story takes place after the events of the previous game, "Megaman X4". The eight hunters allied with X have infiltrated the fortress of their new evil leader, Dark Elf. However, at the same time, Dr. Light has also taken over his own fortress. There are three paths to follow in this game: The game received mixed reviews. IGN rated the game an 8 out of 10, praising its soundtrack and originality but criticizing its unbalanced difficulty and overall design ("... it's no "X4"-like game"). Although it received an 8, GameSpot gave the game a 5 out of 10, noting that it "isn't the best" installment in the series. Game Revolution rated it a 7.5/10, stating that "Megaman X for the SNES is an average SNES game with average graphics and music... but there's nothing wrong with that." The game was awarded Best Console Platform Retro Game at IGN's Best of 2005 awards. An enhanced port of the game for the PlayStation 2 was initially released in 2002 in Japan and North America, where it met with generally positive reviews. While the gameplay remained the same, the port was given additional content - new levels, a character select screen, and boss rush mode. A re-release of the game in North America and Europe in late 2003 also received mixed reviews. A European version released by Capcom in 2007 received better reviews upon its release - IGN rated it 7 out of 10, GameSpot rated it 6.5/10, while Eurogamer gave it 7 out of 10. The game became the final Megaman title to be adapted for a home console. "", released in 2010, was developed by Next Level Games instead. "Megaman X8" was announced at the time of Megaman X4's release to coincide with the series' tenth anniversary. The game marks Zero's final appearance in the main series, as he is replaced by Axl, who debuted in Megaman 9 (which was released close to two months after X8). cfa1e77820
